NATWEST customers across the area faced financial difficulties yesterday after the bank’s computer systems failed to update people’s accounts overnight.

The problems meant that money put into people’s accounts the day before wasn’t showing up on bank statements.

The bank’s online banking service was also down for part of the day.

Last night more than 1,000 Natwest branches across the country – including ones in London Road, North End, and Commercial Road – stayed open an hour later until 6pm so people could put money into their accounts.

A statement posted on the Natwest website at 6pm last night said: ‘We can confirm that all account balance information has now been updated.

‘The majority of customers will now be able to view an up-to-date balance, however some customers may still be impacted.

‘We recognise this has caused significant inconvenience for our customers, and we continue to work to resolve these issues and restore a full service.

‘Staff at our call centres are also ready to answer questions and help where they can.’
