Last week, The News launched the awards in the paper.

Today’s event saw sponsors, including BAE Systems, the overall sponsor, get together and celebrate the launch.

Editor Mark Waldron said: ‘We have launched The News Business Excellence Awards. It has been a fantastic event. A lot of people turned up; it was really buzzing and really positive. What the awards are all about is getting people talking to each other; sharing their stories. It is a great place to do business.’

Brian Johnson, UK business development director for BAE Systems Naval Ships also spoke at the event, as well as Matt Fox, managing director of Dynamite Recruitment Solutions, which won a number of awards earlier this year.

Mr Johnson said: ‘We have been sponsoring the event for the last five years and we are really proud to do so.

‘Businesses in the area are important to BAE Systems. We employ about 3,000 people in the area, but we rely on the supply chain hugely. They are key to ours and the navy’s success. Having the business awards and having these companies talking about themselves is really good for BAE Systems.’

Speaking about the impact the accolades have had on his business, Mr Fox said: ‘It has had a really positive impact, most notably in terms of brand awareness. Generally speaking, it has helped us very well.

‘I would absolutely recommend taking part. The promotion opportunities are extremely significant. The impact on morale generally as a team and being associated with awards and networking at events like this are pretty great.’
