A WEST SUSSEX nightclub popular with revellers in the Portsmouth area has closed.

Thursday’s, in Oving, near Chichester, made the announcement on its Twitter feed yesterday.

The sudden news came as a shock to many across social media.

In addition to announcing the closure, Thursday’s used its Twitter account to thank customers.

The nightclub tweeted: ‘As of now Thursdays Nightclub is now CLOSED.

‘Thanks to all our customers that have made ts what it is.’

Asked why it had closed by customers, the club added: ‘nothin(sp) bad the landlords would like there(sp) building back.’

A spokesman for Thursday’s said the club did not wish to comment at this time.

A Chichester District Council spokesman said it had no involvement in the closure, and its licensing department knew nothing about the move.

The news has sparked mixed reaction on social media, with many lamenting the loss of the club - the only of its kind in the area - and others praising the closure.

Some people are calling for a Tiger Tiger nightclub to open in its place, while others suggested a club could open at Chichester Gate Leisure Park in Terminus Road.

Speaking on Facebook, Helen Christmas said: ‘Sad news, I remember Thursdays from my youth. Would be a good opportunity for some local entrepreneur to build a new club in one of those empty units at Chichester Gate.’

Aaron David RC also commented on the closure and said: ‘I can’t believe it, just wow. I was at Chichester College 2001 until 2003 and I used to visit this place.’
