A TRADE union will be holding a universal credit protest in Portsmouth this month.

Alan Burgess and members of Unite the Community plan to protest at the constituency offices of MP Penny Mordaunt on November 10.

The trade union organisation supports disabled and retired people who are out of work.

Alan, press officer for Unite the Community’s Portsmouth and District branch, said he is expecting 60-100 people to attend the event at 1000 Lakeside.

Alan said: ‘We will be holding a protest and the theme is universal credit.

‘We are bringing people together to protest on the doorstep of Penny Mordaunt’s constituancy office.

‘Structurally, the universal credit scheme has a six week delay in payment. This has led to people not being able to pay their rent.

‘Suffolk currently reports five million pounds in rent arrears. We represent people like the mentally and physically disabled who are currently out of work so this is a huge issue which is likely to come and effect people in Portsmouth.’
