WATER metering will stop the vital resource being wasted, an MP has said.

George Hollingbery, MP for Meon Valley, welcomed the announcement by Southern Water that water meters would be rolled out to homes in Durley, Soberton and Bishop’s Waltham as part of a wider five-year programme across Hampshire and Sussex.

The scheme, which will be completed by 2015, is designed to secure water resources and reduce water use.

Mr Hollingbery said: ‘Studies have shown that homes with water meters use around ten per cent less on average. In an area such as ours which has been designated as being under “serious water stress” this is vitally important.’
