Welcome boost for independent traders

INDEPENDENT traders used the day as a way to highlight their contributions to thriving high streets across the country.

Stuart Clark, who set up handmade cosmetic company Whiff of Wickham, said the day was vital to showcase the importance of small businesses to the local economy.

Stuart and his wife Sarah-Jayne, from Southwick, opened their first shop in Warwick Lane, Wickham, last month.

He said: ‘Small Business Saturday is fantastic. There are so many small businesses out there that need more support and recognition.

‘Small businesses keep money in the local community rather than it being spent in far off places.’

Colin Telford, of Hayling Island Bookshop in Mengham Road, said it was a great way to encourage shoppers in through their door.

‘Small Business Saturday is essential for promoting businesses like ours,’ he said.

His wife Marie helped to organise free parking in Havant borough, which returned for a second year.

Caroline Collings-Wood is the chair of Portsmouth and South East Hampshire branch of the Federation of Small Businesses. She runs Solent Business Academy in Rodney Road, Milton.

She said: ‘It’s a great opportunity to showcase small independent traders.’
