The promotion at Whistler’s in Westbourne and on Hayling Island saw punters tuck into a portion of sausage or cod and chips for a quid on St George’s Day, on Tuesday.
Hundreds revelled in the price cut and donated to the Rowans Hospice, the newly-established Heart of Hayling Boxing Club and island school’s body Hayling Hi-5.
All proceeds from the day went to the initiatives – with £300 apiece given to Hi-5 and Heart of Hayling and £591 collected for the Rowans Hospice, based in Waterlooville.
Rana Denholm, co-owner of Whistler’s, said it was one of the chippy’s ‘best St George’s Days ever’ – having offered the deal for eight years.
‘Everyone was tired but buzzing by the end of it and the atmosphere was brilliant,’ she said.
‘We hope our customers enjoyed it just as much as we did.
‘Working with Rowans Hospice, Hi-5 and Heart of Hayling Boxing Club was also real pleasure – they are run by amazing people who give meaning to it all and are the true heroes in our book.’
Rana said the £1 deal will return to both Whistler’s venues next year.
‘We’re also really grateful to our suppliers for donating some of what was sold – T Quality, Smales, FAS, Southcoast Potatoes and Treagust Butchers – their kindness and support is second to none,’ she added.
