During his years as a generalist leadership coach, Paul began to develop a fascination with emotions and behaviour in leadership and team development.

He launched The Mental Muscle Company in 2013 after building leadership programmes based around emotional intelligence.

Having got through the global economic crisis in 2008 and 2009 as a business owner, Paul said he feels the world is as challenging and uncertain today, which is why continual coaching and development is so crucial to businesses and the teams who steer them.

He said: ‘Professionals in all fields need coaches, but coaches need to recognise they must add demonstrable value. The contract between a coach and a customer means we may be able to change things that aren’t working, and amplify the things that are - but only if we’re honest.

‘A challenging level of honesty with my clients is a contract I have never broken and never will break. Telling people what they want to hear may, superficially, seem more likely to lead to repeat business, but it won’t work.’

‘I ask challenging questions, help people to confront the answers and offer them support to find a way through. My sessions can be emotionally draining because they need to be, but they’re rewarding. Ultimately, I help people to perform better and achieve more.’

Between 2000 and 2013 he and his wife founded and ran the Whiteley Oaks and Solent Suns basketball clubs to provide opportunities for young people in the local area, which led to him providing mental toughness and confidence coaching for his team members.

He said: ‘Training and developing people has been in my blood for as long as I can remember.’
