ONLINE bike retailer and Portsmouth success story Wiggle will move part of its business to the midlands next year.
Members of staff working in Wiggle’s distribution centre in North Harbour have been informed of the move to Bilston in Wolverhampton, the company has confirmed.
The move will begin towards the end of next year.
Its new centre is 323,000sq ft – more than three times the size of the company’s current warehouse spaces.
As The News has reported, most of Wiggle’s staff will remain in the city.
Richard Boon, Wiggle’s director of human resources, said: ‘We have confirmed to our staff that the move to Wolverhampton is now confirmed.
‘We will be moving to the Citadel Logistics Centre towards the latter part of 2015 into a warehouse that is approximately 320,000sq ft.
‘We will begin the move from around summer next year and should be fully in place by the end of the year or early 2016.
‘As we have previously said, no redundancies are expected before summer next year.
‘We are already in consultation with our elected staff representatives.’
The company has been looking for a new warehouse for more than a year to meet its growing demand.
It is understood Wiggle is temporarily moving from its Harbourgate site in Southampton Road, Cosham, to Fareham Reach Business Park in Gosport.
The move will give the company extra warehouse space before it makes the permanent move.
Warehouse space at the Citadel Logistics Centre in Bilston has been advertised at £5.25 per sq ft.
According to property experts in Portsmouth, land of a similar size in the Hampshire area would cost ‘a few pounds’ more per sq ft.
There are few sites of the size required by the online firm in this area.
Wiggle’s head office will remain in 1000 Lakeside in North Harbour and is increasing its workforce.
