WORK will begin on a new housing development in the heart of Milton tomorrow.

The development is set to breathe new life into the Finchdeans, formerly part of St Mary’s Hospital, and will be built by social housing provider Guinness Hermitage.

The firm is working with Portsmouth City Council and PMC Construction and Development.

Guinness Hermitage bought the late-Victorian former infirmary from the Portsmouth Primary Care Trust.

The development will see the two former hospital buildings refurbished and extended to provide a mix of low-cost ownership and affordable rented homes.

Surinder Heer, Guinness Hermitage’s director of development, said: ‘The Finchdeans is an exciting project which has been carefully designed to make use of existing space, while retaining original features to ensure that the Victorian buildings and new extensions are sympathetic to their surroundings.

‘The redevelopment project follows previous projects we have successfully developed with Portsmouth City Council.’

Work is expected to be finished in 2015.
