Workshops launched to teach skills for cross-Channel rally

A MARINA is to launch workshops to teach people the skills needed to sail or power-boat across the English Channel.

Skippers can learn how to use GPS and electronic navigation, about passage planning, collision regulation and other skills before taking to the water in the workshops, launched by Premier Marinas, in collaboration with Urban Truant RYA Centre.

The first shore-based navigation workshop will be held on March 19 at Swanwick Marina, off Bridge Road, Swanwick.

Then, in April and May, the Urban Truant RYA Centre, also based at Swanwick Marina, will host a practical power skills and a sail skills day.

In June, as part of the programme, skippers will also have the opportunity to obtain their International Certificate of Competence and participate in a cross-Channel rally in September.

Director of Urban Truant, Russell Lake said: ‘We are delighted to be involved with this programme.

‘We hope it will help to make berth holders’ boating safer, more fun and encourage them to spread their wings and visit new places.’

Fergus Anderson, active marina co-ordinator, said: ‘If you have been nurturing an aspiration to cross the Channel, but year after year as the season has drawn to a close it remains unfulfilled, this programme can help you turn it in to an achievable reality.’
