Havant school has bright new £2m library as part of new complex

Pupils at Riders infant and junior schools, in Havant, now have a new large and airy library, staff room and a dedicated studio space for music and dance.

There are also additional outdoor play areas and a new reception, working as a link between the two schools.

Part of the formal ceremony, which took place last month, included the completion of a mosaic which is in the new William’s Library.

It has been named after a former pupil who died last summer.

The mosaic is of his favourite character, Bob the Minion, from the Despicable Me film franchise.

The final pieces of the mosaic were added by William’s brother, Philip, who was accompanied by their father.

There was also a puppet show in the new studio, storytelling in William’s Library, Rock Challenge performances and other live music from pupils.

Sue Holdway is the headteacher of the infants’ school.

She said: ‘All the children love working in the new learning spaces, which give a real wow factor to the school. It was worth the wait.’

The development is part of £224m of investment by Hampshire County Council in improving school facilities, expanding schools and building new schools across county.

Cutting the ribbon was Councillor Peter Edgar, Hampshire County Council’s executive member for education.

He was joined by Havant Borough Council’s Councillor Faith Ponsonby.

Cllr Edgar said: ‘I was honoured to officially open the new extension at Riders Infant and Junior School.

‘It was great to see first-hand how the county council’s multi-million investment programme in schools is making a difference.

‘I am extremely impressed with the fantastic new shared learning facilities our in-house property team has created.

It will not only serve as an important gateway between the infant and junior schools, but will also provide more opportunities for children and staff to work together.’
