Headteacher says Gosport school has a '˜bright future'

WE ARE heading in the right direction to improve this school.

That is the message from Vicki White, the headteacher of Bridgemary School, who says staff are working hard to provide a better education for the students.

As previously reported in The News, the Gosport school in Wych Lane was placed in special measures following an Ofsted inspection in October 2014 after several years of problems.

Its summer GCSE results also fell below the government’s minimum standard.

But recent inspections by Ofsted have shown the school is improving.

Mrs White said: ‘The school is making progress in all the key areas and I am really fortunate that I have got staff who are supportive.

‘Our students are absolutely desperate to do well and that, with supportive teachers, is a good combination.

‘It means the future is really exciting for this school.

‘There isn’t any reason why Bridgemary cannot become an outstanding school.’

Mrs White added: ‘We are in difficult times and we are taking a really rigorous response to the results from the summer.’

The school is expecting to have another visit soon from Ofsted, having had three others since going into special measures.

In the most recently-published report, from an inspection in October last year, it said students are making better progress.

The report said: ‘In a range of subjects, students are increasingly producing a better quality and quantity of work that more closely reflects their ability.

‘Teachers more frequently plan lessons that are better matched to students’ needs, but there remains a lack of challenge, particularly for middle-ability students.’

It added: ‘Gaps between disadvantaged students, disabled students, those with special educational needs and their peers are closing.’

Mrs White took over as headteacher 18 months ago.

The report said of leadership and management effectiveness: ‘The headteacher continues to communicate and exemplify high expectations to staff and students.

‘Everyone understands the role they are expected to play in moving the academy forwards.’
