Dave Waiting, a support officer at gas distribution network SGN’s operations control centre in Portsmouth, spoke at an event called Spark, which was held in London.

Spark was organised by SGN in partnership with Girlguiding.

More than 6,000 girls and young women from the age of five to 25 attended the two- day event.

Mr Waiting spoke about potential Stem careers and raised awareness of gas safety and the dangers of carbon monoxide.

He said: ‘Many of the girls were intrigued by gas because it’s something they hadn’t really thought about before. It really opened their eyes to the possibilities.’

Pamela Goee, SGN’s head of community, said: ‘We hope by raising awareness of the variety of jobs available in Stem subjects at an early age, we’ll increase the pool of women working in engineering roles in the gas industry over the coming years.’
