New bike shed at Gosport school to encourage cycling

PUPILS are being encouraged to cycle to school after a new bike shed was built.

St John’s Primary School, in Gosport, has built the shed in an attempt to encourage pupils to make a healthier journey to school.

Pupils in Year 5 and 6 have been taking road safety lessons at the school and scooter training has been offered to younger children.

Prior to the opening of the bike shed, only about eight pupils and a few members of staff cycled to school.

Deputy headteacher of the school on Grove Road, Carolyn Wilkinson said: ‘The children are very excited about the new shed.

‘When they came back after half-term they were all crowding around it.’

Having experienced problems with parking outside the school, Hampshire County Council provided money for the materials to make the shed and adjoining scooter pod.

The mayor and mayoress of Gosport Cllr Keith Farr and wife June went to the official opening along with community police officers who were helping to tag the children’s bikes for extra safety.
