New law is welcomed by college principal

Nigel Duncan welcomed the news that the Department for Education would look to bring in the legislation ‘at the earliest opportunity’ to make schools give vocational routes as much time as academic subjects.

The move followed concerns from ministers about careers advice as some schools were only recommending apprenticeships or technical routes to the lowest-achieving pupils.

Mr Duncan said: ‘This is excellent news for further education providers such as Fareham College, which delivers an extensive technical and professional curriculum, including apprenticeships.

‘Training of this type provides students with important skills needed to be competitive in the jobs market and to make a valuable contribution to businesses, the local economy and to pursue a rewarding career. I am delighted that the importance of these courses is being recognised.’
