Pilot project will engage peoplewith learning disabilities with arts

Portsmouth Cultural Trust has announced the launch of Evolve, an Esmée Fairbairn Foundation-funded disability arts consortium between the trust, New Theatre Royal and the Aspex art gallery.

Evolve is a pilot project aimed at addressing the problem that children, young people and adults with physical and learning disabilities and autism in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas do not have as much exposure to 
arts and culture as they should.

It will also aim to provide opportunities for people of all ages, living with a disability or autism, to engage with artwork across a range of art forms, from visual arts, to performance and music.

The project is backed by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, which aims to improve the quality of life for people across the UK.

The project will include events at Portsmouth Guildhall, the New Theatre Royal, Guildhall Walk and Aspex art gallery in Gunwharf Quays throughout the year.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn a range of new skills, including digital music and video production, puppet-making, ceramics, theatre and performance skills, craft making and drawing, creative writing and much more.

There is a day of drama and puppet making based on the Chinese New Year at the New Theatre Royal on Wednesday from 10am to 4pm.
