Portsmouth fire: Priory School issues update to parents after nearby Goldsmith Avenue, Southsea, fire

A Portsmouth school has issued an update to parents following a nearby fire.

Priory School in Fawcett Road is located close to the scene of a blaze at a car repair workshop in Goldsmith Avenue, Southsea

More than 40 firefighters attended the scene earlier today and road closures are in place.

Residents in Orchard Road have been evacuated as a precaution.

Priory School have now issued an update to parents following the earlier fire.

In an initial statement on Facebook, headteacher Stewart Vaughan said: ‘We were made aware of the fire in our vicinity and took immediate action to safeguard students and staff.

‘All members of our school community are safe and we are working with the emergency services to provide support to those in our local community who need shelter.

‘We would like to thank our staff, parents and students for their swift and collaborative actions. We will continue to update parents and staff via email, text and on our website.’

Evacuated residents have been moved to Priory School Sport Centre, one resident told The News.

The school then followed up with a second statement, which reads: Based on advice at 12.50pm from the police and fire service, we are returning to a normal school day.

‘All students will have a 30 minute break at designated times and depart from Rugby Road and Victoria Road gates between 2.55pm and 3pm.’
