Portsmouth school receives double nomination for national Times Education Supplement awards

A SECONDARY school has been nominated for two national awards.

Admiral Lord Nelson School has been shortlisted for the Times Education Supplement Awards for the category of International Schools and Creative School of the Year.

Julia Wisbey, senior leader in personal development, said: ‘We are the only secondary school in the city to be short-listed for any awards and so to be nominated for two categories is a phenomenal achievement. It is incredible recognition of the work we do at school.’

The Creative School of the Year Award looks to recognise schools who promote the arts and ‘put creativity at the heart of their work’.

Mrs Wisbey said: ‘At a time when the arts can become marginalised in schools we recognise creative subjects as an integral part of our curriculum. We recently received the Artsmark Platinum Award for our work. It is the second time we have received this award from Arts Council England.’

As well as producing a film about the role of the arts at Admiral Lord Nelson the school is putting together a production to be staged at the Guildhall in July.

‘This will involve artistic creations going on display as well as a performances of drama, dance and music,’ said Mrs Wisbey.

The International School Award is in recognition of the school with the most innovative strategy to promote understanding of other countries, languages and cultures.

Mrs Wisbey said: ‘One of the fantastic opportunities the children have is to go to Gambia. We have a sponsorship with a school in Gambia where the children get involved in projects such as building new classrooms. We also run an annual trip to Poland where the children visit Auschwitz.’

The school also runs a history trip to the First World War battlefields in Ypres and welcomes students from China as part of cultural exchange programme.

Headteacher Nys Hardingham said: ‘I am thoroughly delighted and proud that our tremendous work at Admiral Lord Nelson School and our longstanding commitment to arts education and to working with UNICEF and our partner schools in Gambia has been nationally recognised by TES with the short-listing for these two awards.’

The awards ceremony will take place on June 21 at the Grosvenor Hotel in London.
