Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan has pledged his support to a potential new law, proposed by Labour MP Mike Amesbury, which will reduce the cost of uniforms for struggling families.

Mr Morgan said: ‘School is a place where young people should be able to aim high, work hard and achieve. They should be able to pursue their goals free from any additional pressure around uniform. I know many Portsmouth families work relentlessly to support their children in their academic endeavours but when one in eight families get into debt trying to keep up with uniform costs.’

Mr Amesbury added: ‘Mr Morgan’s backing is crucial if this bill is to become law and I firmly believe it will have a hugely beneficial impact not only to those people in both of our constituencies, but to families right across the country too.’

The bill has had its second reading and must gain the support of MPs to become law.
