Portsmouth university projects gets cash for sustainability programme

AN INTERNATIONAL project led by the University of Portsmouth has won €1.6m Euros to help cities solve the increasing challenges of food, water and energy management.

The university’s Cluster for Sustainable Cities group was successful in getting the grant to help scientists, businesses and organisations to work together to manage food, water and energy.

The ‘Crunch, Climate Resilient Urban Nexus Choice: operationalising the Food-Water-Energy Nexus’ project investigates food, water and energy as one complex system.

The international project, led by Professor Steffen Lehmann, director of the Cluster for Sustainable Cities, will start on April 1.

Nineteen partners from six countries will be involved and is funded from eight different funding agencies.

Professor Lehmann said: ‘This is a very prestigious initiative and we are very happy to be funded for the next three years.

‘We will tackle the challenge of urban transitions to develop international connections and collaborations worldwide on the food, water, energy nexus approach.

‘We are aiming for ground-breaking outcomes that are truly trans-disciplinary, working closely with local stakeholders at every step of the project.’
