Children from the Havant school did their own Race for Life to boost the coffers of Cancer Research UK.

Led by the school council, pupils have been holding fundraising activities this week.

Teacher Leanne Austen said: ‘Our school council decided it wanted to support a charity.’

‘Out of three charities, they decided they wanted to do the Race for Life in aid of Cancer Research.’

Children asked family and friends to sponsor them, as well as using their own money.

‘In the playground they had a penalty shoot out, they designed medals for the Race for Life and they had skipping challenges,’ Leanne explained.

‘They were trying to raise £1,000, which it really looks like they are going to hit.

‘Some children have raised in excess of £50 themselves.’

Race for Life was split into two events – competitive and fun runners.

Pupil Sophie Haworth, 10, is a member of the school council.

She said: ‘I was a fun runner in a fairy costume.’

Sophie made her own activity, revealing: ‘I did a beanbag toss which raised about £50.’

Another pupil, Charlise Harrop, 10, another member of the school council, added: ‘We did running activities in the playground for 20p a go. It went really well.’

The idea for the Race for Life came as the school wanted a change from their annual cross-country race.

Leanne believes this is one of the biggest events the school has done, and the pupils are keen to do it again next year.

The staff were pleased with the pupils, who were well-organised and put in a lot of physical effort.

‘The whole school is incredibly proud of all the children,’ said Leanne.

‘They really did us proud. It was really quite special.’
