Southsea teachers fundraising for Ghana trip

Two Portsmouth teaching assistants are trying to raise £1,000 in donations for children with special needs at a school in Ghana.

Caroline Munro and Jess Codrington, of the Mary Rose Academy in Southsea are taking on the challenge.

They hope to take books, computer equipment, stationary and sports equipment with them to the New 
Horizons School in Accra, Ghana.

Caroline said: ‘It’s the school that we’ve had a relationship with over the years and we want to go out and give something back.

‘We want to take out as many resources as we can and help the school develop and grow into something like we have set up in Portsmouth.’

Caroline and Jess will be spending two weeks volunteering in the school from July 17.

New Horizons is a special school in Ghana that provides daily education for children with learning disabilities and vocational training for disabled adults.

The school aims to provide a special a type of education and vocational training for children and adults aged four to 40.

Mary Rose Academy has been partnered with the school for a number of years and sends an annual donation.

They are aiming to raise £1,000 to spend on equipment and resources to be donated to New Horizons.

Now they are asking the local community and businesses for donations to help fund resources and equipment for the school.

Anyone willing to donate can do so via cheque to Mary Rose Academy with reference to New Horizons or through their Crowdfunder page.
