Student starts life on board superyacht

A STUDENT has swapped the more traditional career path of university for a life on board luxury superyachts.

Thomas Andrews, 24, of Portsmouth has just completed phase one of the Professional Yacht Cadetship at maritime training provider and youth charity UKSA on the Isle of Wight.

He is now working on board a classic sailing yacht cruising the Mediterranean in his first professional position.

The PYC combines study sessions and sea phase training to prepare participants for life as a deckhand.

He said: ‘I had done little bits of travelling on yachts including some cruising in Malaysia.

‘It was the appeal to earn whilst you learn which interested me to the course after I read an article in the Guardian.

‘I am really enjoying the course so far, it is very intense. My plan is to continue to work my way up in the superyacht industry.’
