Student wins a top translation competition

A STUDENT from the University of Portsmouth has beaten entries from all over the world to win a prestigious Chinese translation competition.

Luisetta Mudie won the Bai Meigui Translation Competition for her translation of a non-fiction piece of text by Li Jingrui, an author and journalist who writes a column for the Chinese edition of The Wall Street Journal.

Luisetta, a distance-learning student on the MA Translation Studies, won a full bursary worth £490 to a translation summer school at City University, London. Her translation will also be published in Stand magazine in 2017.

She said: ‘Translation has always been a daily part of my job as a China journalist, but I enrolled for the MA at Portsmouth because I am starting to find translation interesting in itself.

‘I’m really delighted to have won, and I’m also looking forward to the translation summer school, and perhaps working on more literary translations in future.’
