Submarines to battle it out at swimming pool

MORE than 100 students will test out their submarine designs in a competition at a swimming pool.

The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology’s European International Submarine Race will take place on July 9 at Hilsea Lido.

University students from around the world will be participating. The submarines are human-powered and must complete a there-and-back course against the clock.

The submarines have been designed by the students and the race is a challenge to combine technical skill with sporting ability and promote engineering.

David Loosley, the IMarEST chief executive, said: ‘It’s wonderful that we can work together to stoke up excitement about marine engineering.

‘And, by doing so, encourage more young people into the sector.’

The event is being sponsored by Babcock International Group, BMT Defence Service and QinetiQ.

Spectators are welcome from 11am until 5pm.
