'˜The university contributes 1.1 billion pounds annually to the local economy and it is important we showcase the good work it does,' added Mr Morgan.

Despite the current success, Mr Marsden was concerned about potential reductions in revenue streams in the provision of funding for research.

'˜It is important the government continues to provide proper funding at the high end of education,' stressed Mr Marsden.

The shadow minister is particularly concerned about the current issues for further education colleges and adult education. '˜There have been massive real term cuts in funding for FE colleges. There has also been a real drop in adult learners which has fallen by one million in the last six years,' said Mr Marsden.Â
