THIS WEEK IN 1992: Pupils taught to probe religion

Children were to question the teachings of the bible rather than accept them as gospel in a radical new religious education syllabus in Hampshire schools.

They would be encouraged to make up their own minds about Christianity and other faiths.

Religious education was the one compulsory element of school lessons not included in the national curriculum, but the new syllabus brought in by Hampshire County Council followed the form of the national curriculum.
