Year-long project on music for children

SCHOOLS are being urged to encourage young musicians by putting on concerts.

Councillor Keith Chapman, chairman at Hampshire County Council, has launched a project called A Year in Music. He wants youngsters to take part and is setting up a forum for them to share their views and help shape Hampshire Music Service.

Cllr Chapman said: ‘Music breaks down barriers, encourages an equal platform for participation and develops social and study skills to assist young people with their education, and in their wider lives.

‘With help from our Hampshire Music Service, I hope I can help bring all of this to more children and young people in the county, and encourage those who are already musicians, to aim even higher with their music.’

An award scheme will also be set up to encourage schools to put on concerts for pupils.

The year-long project will also increase the number of events put on by the Hampshire Music Service.

It was launched at The Anvil on June 26 in Basingstoke.
