Charity calls for people in Portsmouth to support awareness week

The Alzheimer’s Society in Portsmouth and south east Hampshire is celebrating Dementia Awareness Week, which starts on Monday.

As part of the campaign, staff and volunteers will be at different locations to get people to tackle dementia by volunteering, donating or campaigning for change.

On Monday there will be a tea dance at the Jubilee Centre, on Millennium Court in Waterlooville, between 1pm and 3pm.

Lucie Debenham, services manager for Alzheimer’s Society in central Hampshire, said: ‘We’re calling on people in Portsmouth to show their support at a number of different events this Dementia Awareness Week.

‘Dementia doesn’t care who you are, it could affect us all.

‘It’s set to be the 21st century’s biggest killer, with someone developing it every three minutes and so many people are facing it alone.

‘People with dementia often feel – and are – misunderstood, marginalised and isolated. But with the right support and understanding they can continue to live fulfilling lives and make a contribution to their communities.’

There are 2,247 people are living with dementia in Portsmouth.

Alzheimer’s Society is available for anyone affected by dementia and provides information and support.
