Coronavirus: America's Cup, Portsmouth FC fixtures, Leasing.com Trophy and other major events cancelled or postponed due to the pandemic

The city has been in lockdown for weeks now with residents only allowed out for shopping at essential stores such as supermarkets and for one form of exercise a day.

Non-essential venues such as cinemas, pubs, clubs, theatres and music venues have all been shut.

The pandemic has seen a number of high profile events in the coming weeks and months have been cancelled.

Here are the major events that have been axed or postponed due to the pandemic:

America’s Cup

Portsmouth was due to hold an event in the Emirates America’s Cup World Series between June 4 and 7.

However this has now been cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Portsmouth Comic Con

The event was due to return to Portsmouth Guildhall in May, however it has now been postponed.

New dates have been announced for Saturday, August 15, and Sunday, August 16.

Customers who have already bought tickets for the event will be able to use them for the rearranged dates.

The Kings Theatre

The Kings Theatre, in Albert Road, will close until Sunday, May 31.

Ticket holders for cancelled shows will be contacted by box office staff, and tickets are still available for all shows scheduled for after the reopening of the theatre, according to a statement on its website.

Events such as Romesh Ranganathan’s Cynic’s Mixtape tour have been postponed to 2021.

Portsmouth Guildhall

Shows and events at the Guildhall over the coming weeks have been postponed and cancelled.

Portsmouth Pride

Portsmouth Pride was due to take place on on Saturday, June 20 on Castle Field in Southsea.

This year’s event was to have a theme celebrating the armed forces, marking the 20th anniversary of gay and lesbian people being able to openly serve in the UK’s military.

But the event has now been cancelled due to ongoing concerns about the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

Wedgewood Rooms

The Wedgewood Rooms in Albert Road, Southsea, has shut due to the crisis and has not set a date for when it will re-open.

In a post on social media, The Wedgewood Rooms said: ‘In light of recent recommendations from the government, and concern for our staff and customers we have decided to pause all events here at The Wedgewood Rooms with immediate effect, and for the foreseeable future, until we have all weathered the incoming storm.’

Parkrun

All Parkrun events across the area have been cancelled due to the pandemic.

Lee-on-the-Solent VE75 celebrations

Plans to commemorate the end of the Second World War in Europe have been put on hold until further notice.

Organisers had planned for VE75 to be celebrated in Lee-on-the-Solent from May 8 to 10 this year.

But following the coronavirus outbreak and the government guidelines announced surrounding VE75 celebrations, the decision has been made to postpone the event until later in the year.

Goodwood Festival of Speed

Thre largest motoring garden party in the world has been postponed following fears over coronavirus.

The Festival of Speed, held at Goodwood House in West Sussex, is the latest high-profile event to fall victim to the deadly disease.

Leasing.com Trophy Final

Pompey were due to make a return trip to Wembley at the start of April, however it has been postponed.

The Blues had sold in excess of 50,000 tickets for the clash, but they are still set to be given their Wembley day out in the Leasing.com Trophy final.

League One has been suspended for over a month – and there is no current date scheduled for the season to resume.
