Coronavirus in Portsmouth: Number of cases, deaths, Portsmouth games delayed, venues closed, shops shut, supermarket opening times, travel updates

Since the pandemic began, there has been thousands of confirmed cases of the virus across the country.

If you are trying to keep track of all the information about how coronavirus is impacting Portsmouth, this is our round up.

This information is correct as of 2pm on Thursday, March 19.

Here’s what you need to know:

How many cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Portsmouth?

As of 9am on Wednesday, March 18, there has been four confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the city.

Have there been any deaths in Portsmouth?

A 59-year-old woman who had tested positive for the virus died in the city on Tuesday, March 18.

She had been treated at Queen Alexandra Hospital and had underlying health conditions.

What is the total number of cases in Hampshire?

Including the four people in Portsmouth and four in Southampton – the total number of cases of coronavirus in the county is at 85 as of 9am on Wednesday, March 18.

Are schools closed?

The Prime Minister announced on March 18 that all schools in the UK would be shutting after Friday, March 20.

They will remain shut until further notice – and GCSE and A Level exams will not go ahead.

What else has shut?

Following the government's advise that people should avoid all non-essential social contact and to avoid pubs, clubs and theatres, a number of venues across the city have now shut.

Here are the ones that have closed so far:

Music venues

Wedgewood Rooms in Southsea have shut for the forseeable future.

Museums

National Museum of the Royal Navy has closed all its Portsmouth and Gosport sites due to the outbreak – in an unprecedented move.

Aspex Gallery in Gunwharf Quays is shut until further notice.

Theatres

The Kings Theatre in Southsea has announced all its performances until May 1 have been cancelled.

The New Theatre Royal announced similar measures, opting to close its doors for at least 14 days with the promise of ‘ongoing’ reviews as further government advice is announced.

The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre in Havant said it will close until April 4, when week-by-week rolling cancellation plans will be drawn up.

The Titchfield Festival Theatre has also announced a closure ‘until further notice’.

The Portsmouth Guildhall has not announced a full closure, but said in a statement: ‘It is likely that many shows for the foreseeable future will be postponed. Customers should check our website for further details.’

Shops

In Gunwharf Quays a number of shops have already shut.

This includes:

- Nike (Until March 27)

- The North Face

- Timberland

- Vans

- Stance

- UGG Australia

- Kipling

- ASICS

- Under Armour

- Denby - open as usual but closing at 6pm

- Zwilling will be cleaned daily.

- Lulu Guinness will not be accepting cash.

- Clarke’s are putting in extra cleaning measures.

- Penguin is asking customers who display any symptoms of coronavirus – such as a new continuous cough and a fever – not to enter the store.

Cinemas

Vue in Gunwharf Quays has been shut as has No6 Cinema in the Historic Dockyard, Odeon in Port Solent and Cineworld in Whiteley.

Are supermarkets still open?

Yes, they are still open as of March 19.

However there are a number of changes including earlier closing times and specialist hours for just elderly and vulnerable people.

How has transport been affected?

South Western Railway have announced that they will be cancelling services at short notice.

Wightlink have announced changes to its services – in particularly the St Clare ferry between Portsmouth and Isle of Wight.

There will be no foot passengers and people will be advised to remain in their vehicles for the duration of the crossing.

Brittany Ferries has announced a number of changes to its schedule due to the coronavirus outbreak.

How is sport being affected?

Pompey will have no games until at least April 30, the EFL announced on Thursday, March 19.

Major sports events around the world are being called off or suspended – with Euros pushed back to June 2021.
