Coronavirus in Portsmouth: More than 100 cases now diagnosed in city

Portsmouth has more than 100 cases of coronavirus diagnosed in the city, according to the latest government figures.

Since the start of the outbreak there have been 104 positive tests for the virus in the city as of Monday April 6 – up from 96 cases the day before.

56 patients who had coronavirus have died at QA Hospital so far, and four care home residents at Harry Sotnick House also passed away after displaying virus symptoms.

There are 149 cases in Southampton, and 921 in the rest of Hampshire - bringing the county's total to 1,174.

The number of deaths in the UK linked to coronavirus currently stands at 5,373, according to Public Health England.

The Department of Health and Social Care also revealed that there were 51,608 confirmed cases of the virus.

A statement from the government department read: ‘As of 9am 6 April, 252,958 tests have concluded, with 13,069 tests on 5 April (excl. Northern Ireland). 208,837 people have been tested of which 51,608 tested positive.

‘As of 5pm on 5 April, of those hospitalised in the UK who tested positive for coronavirus 5,373 have died.’

The latest figures come as details on the latest fatalities filtered through.

A British nurse and a midwife are among the latest to have died with coronavirus.

Liz Glanister, described as a ‘long-serving nurse’ died with the disease on Friday after years of service at Aintree University Hospital.

Midwife Lynsay Coventry of Princess Alexandra Hospital Trust in Harlow died on Thursday.
