Our readers told us their favourite garden centres in the Portsmouth area - is your go-to on the list?

To drum up support for our local businesses, we took to Facebook to ask which garden centres in the Portsmouth area are your favourites.

Dozens of you answered – so we’ve collected your responses to help you choose where to shop when the time is right.

Be sure to check each garden centre before visiting, as some appear to be staggering their openings.

Mount Folly Nurseries – 01329 832294

Multiple people suggested the Mount Folly Nurseries in Southwick Road, North Boarhunt, near Fareham, as a good place for readers to satisfy their gardening needs.

The business has said it is looking to reopen on Wednesday, May 13 as it deals with orders made during the lockdown.

The message partly read: ‘Please be advised that we are currently NOT open and we are not taking any more orders. Apologies for this.

‘We have to dispatch the orders we have taken first so that our stock isn't sold twice, and prepare the shop to safely welcome you all.

‘We are aiming to re-open Wednesday 20th but will keep you all posted.’

Mud Island – 01329 834 407

You suggested people in the local area should head to nearby Mud Island Garden Centre in Southwick Road, North Boarhunt, near Fareham.

The family-run business reopened today with safety measures in place and a ‘phone and collect’ service for people who don’t wish to go inside.

Keydell Nurseries – (023) 9259 3839

Another handful of readers recommended people get themselves to Keydell Nurseries in Horndean.

The business’s reopening has not yet been announced on its Facebook page, but an admin said on Saturday: ‘If and when we do receive information we can open we will post opening dates online and on social media.

‘We still have a lot of social distancing policies to put into place for when we can reopen as these can not be performed over night.

‘We hope to reopen soon as we miss seeing our customers in store but the health of our staff and customers is our priority currently in these uncertain times.

‘The click and collect service is still currently running, please see our website for further details.’

Rumsey Gardens – (023) 9259 3367

Recommended by reader Rachel Randall, this business, in Drift Road, Clanfield, describes itself as a ‘traditional nursery and herb centre with old world charm.

It has not yet announced its full reopening on Facebook, but says it is taking advance orders while general browsing is off the cards.

Garsons – 01329 844336

As the sponsor of The News annual Bloomin’ Marvellous competition Garsons in Fontley Road, Titchfield, has announced its reopening. Several readers recommended gardeners head there.

It said on Facebook today: ‘We are pleased to announce we will be reopening from 9am. We have made changes in store to make your visit safer. Thank you for your continued support and kind words.’

Stewarts Abbey Garden Centre – 01329 842225

This centre in Mill Lane, Titchfield, has reopened but is currently limiting each trolley to one customer – and no children – while social distancing measures are in place.

A spokesman said: ‘We will use the first few days to monitor the social distancing procedures in our centres, then hope to relax the rule regarding children after that.

‘We would rather be over cautious than unsafe, and hope you agree that is the preferred route for the safety of our staff and customers.

‘We understand this may mean some people are unable to visit during those days of learning, but rest assured we have plenty of stock.’

Abbeycroft Nursery – 07842 193519

Also in Titchfield, this business in Segensworth Road featured among our readers’ favourites.

It confirmed earlier in the week, on Facebook, it would be opening today and said: ‘We CANNOT WAIT to see our old and new customers on Wednesday. For those shielding, we hope to see you soon.

‘From the response we have had, we are expecting Wednesday to be quite busy. We will have chairs out so people can sit down whilst queuing.’
