Portsmouth sees small rise in coronavirus cases in past two weeks

PORTSMOUTH has seen six new coronavirus cases in the past two weeks.

The city has seen a rise in cases with an increase from 2.3 cases per 100,000 people in the seven days to August 2 to 2.8 cases in the seven days to August 9 - making a total of six new cases recorded. There were five new cases reported the previous week.

However, Portsmouth and all local authorities in The News area are in the bottom third of council areas nationally for coronavirus cases, with relatively low rates.

Havant saw a drop after registering a total of 4.0 cases per 100,000 people in the seven days to August 2 to 3.2 in the seven days to August 9. It had a total of four new cases.

Fareham saw a rise in cases with an increase from 0.0 cases per 100,000 people in the seven days to August 2 to 1.7 cases in the seven days to August 9. A total of two new cases have been recorded.

Gosport saw a drop in cases after recording a total of 4.7 cases per 100,000 people in the seven days to August 2 to 1.2 in the seven days to August 9. It had a total of one new case as opposed to four the previous week.

The figures are based on tests carried out in laboratories and in the wider community.

Oldham has the highest rate, jumping from 62 cases per 100,000 people in the seven days to August 2 to 104.6 in the seven days to August 9. A total of 248 new cases have been recorded.

Since the start of the pandemic, the number of cases and rate of infection for this area, broken down by local authority area – as of the afternoon of Friday, August 14 – is:

East Hampshire 509 cases, 416.2 per 100,000 people

Fareham 304 cases, 261.5 per 100,000 people

Gosport 235 cases, 277 per 100,000 people

Havant 375 cases, 297.1 per 100,000 people

Portsmouth 521 cases, 242.4 per 100,000 people

Southampton 979 cases, 387.7 per 100,000 people

Winchester 484 cases, 387.6 per 100,000 people
