Owning a pet improves your health

It’s well documented that owning a pet really does improve our lives both mentally and physically, and studies report that pet owners live longer and exercise more. The love and affection shown to us by our pets keeps us fit and healthy. In return, we need to look after them with regular health check-ups (which are complimentary at The Vet) and keep them up to date with vaccinations and preventative care such as flea and worming treatments.

What are the physical benefits

There are an estimated nine million pet dogs in the UK which need exercising. For owners, that means having the motivation to get off the sofa, and before you know it, you have a daily exercise routine. Walking your dog has a social benefit too, as familiar faces and smiles become soon turn to conversations and friendships are formed.

Companionship makes a difference

A pet at home provides owners loving companionship and affection which reduces stress, anxiety and the feeling of being isolated.  Having the responsibility for another life to look after offers owners a distraction from loneliness, and pets don’t judge their owners, they just love to be loved, and will return the favour unconditionally.

Pets improve mental health

1 in 4 of us may experience mental health problems at some point, and the rewards of being a pet owner are well-founded.  Playing games, cuddling, exercising and feeding pets are all endorphin releasers, bringing a sense of purpose and belonging. Pets are also great friends, offering devotion, plenty of smiles, laughter and a feel-good factor for many years.
