Gym trials new scheme to get more home-schooled kids active

A LEISURE operator has been trialling a new unique scheme  to offer home educated children the chance to get active.

Everyone Active, who manage Fareham Leisure Centre in partnership with Fareham Borough Council, have been working alongside a number of different local groups to create Home Educated Sports which is a new programme that provides time for children that are educated at home to enjoy physical activity.

Children in full-time education have access to at least 30 minutes of exercise every week day and the Home Educated Sports programme is designed to make sure those that are educated at home have access to the same level of activity.

The programme provides up to 20 children a week with the chance to take part in different sports which have included badminton, football and tennis.

Ruth Abrahams, Everyone Active Activities manager, said: ‘We are currently doing a lot of work with local schools to get local young people more active more often and felt that we had this same responsibility to those who were home educated.

‘The sessions have really taken off and are a real mixture of ages; we are enjoying seeing the young people try new sports and get active and we look forward to the future of the scheme.’

Becca Blackman, Everyone Active Activity Leader, added: ‘I really enjoy working with the young people on the scheme; watching them not only keep active but have fun and make friends whilst doing it.’
