Jeremy Hunt, the health secretary, has said he will push for an increase in GPs for the area after it was revealed that NHS CCGs have called for healthcare provision at Welborne to be cut from the plans for the town.

Mr Hunt, replying to a letter from Suella Fernandes – Tory candidate for Fareham, said: ‘I want to assure you that if we are back in government after the general election we will make it a priority to get to the bottom of this. General Practice in this country is the backbone of our NHS and we will ensure all residents, including those at Welborne, can count on good access to GP and primary care services.’

His letter comes after Fareham and Gosport and West Hampshire Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) called for a proposed healthcare facility on the site to be scrapped.

Miss Fernandes contacted Mr Hunt to secure reassurances following the revelation and called for the CCGs to ‘step up.’
