Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the walk is 10 miles long and stretches across the city, passing sites such as the Historic Dockyard and the Yomper statue.

And organisers are gunning to reach the £2m mark from the walk this year, with £1.8m already being raised in previous years.

Ruth White, chief executive of The Rowans, said: ‘We want people to engage in this and support hospice care.

‘It can be a family event or work colleagues coming together in memory of people.

‘Or you can just do it for a bit of fun.

‘If we raise £200k that will provide hospice at home for everyone who wants to die at home in the city of Portsmouth for a year.

‘That makes a significant difference to the people of Portsmouth.’

The Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Councillor David Fuller, launched the event, along with Pompey mascot Nelson and Gosport-born TV actor Marcus Patrick.

Cllr Fuller said: ‘I lost my late mother at The Rowans and I will always be grateful for what they did and the aftercare they provided.’

Marcus visited the hospice along with the cast of pantomime Jack And the Beanstalk at the Kings Theatre over Christmas and said there was a great, happy atmosphere.

The former Hollyoaks actor said: ‘It was so nice to sit and talk to the people.’

This year’s event takes place on June 10 at 10pm.
