MP backs new app to check sugar content

A smart app that allows people to scan barcodes to discover the sugar content of food is being championed by Portsmouth South MP Flick Drummond.

The Sugar Smart app means anyone can now scan the supermarket barcodes of more than 75,000 everyday food or drink products.

The innovation is part of Public Health England’s 2016 Change4Life campaign aimed at tackling obesity through better diet and more exercise.

Ms Drummond said: ‘This app is a great tool and I hope as many people as possible will download it and use it to monitor the amount of sugar they and their loved ones are consuming.’

Five million information packs are being distributed to primary school children as part of the initiative, which runs until mid-February .
