Mum Sarah pays tribute to QA staff who have cared for premature baby JaxÂ

Sarah Craig from Waterlooville was 21 weeks pregnant when her waters suddenly broke while she was sitting at her desk at work.  

She was taken into Queen Alexandra Hospital where it was discovered that she had an infection. Sarah was put on bed rest with all the medication she needed and it was planned that she would be induced at 34 weeks to give the baby the best chance.

However at 31 weeks Sarah suffered some bleeding as the placenta was starting to come away, so the baby had to be delivered. Jax Craig was born on September 21 at 4lbs 3oz.

Jax was very poorly for the first few days before he stabilised. He was intubated and sedated on a ventilator, and he had air on his lungs which was treated with a chest drain.

Sarah said: '˜The team at NICU are amazing and friendly and let you get involved, so you still feel like a parent. I also appreciated their honesty about everything that was going on. After about three nights it just became normal to be here at QA. It's crazy that he is over seven weeks old already but he was not even due until November 23.

'˜The whole experience was really scary but I got a lot of support and advice from a support charity called Little Heart Beats. I could not hold Jax for the first eight days which I found really upsetting. I just kept telling myself that he is fighting so I won't give up hope.

'˜He is now 7lbs and 7oz and doing really well. His hearing and eye tests have come back all fine and we'll hopefully be able to take him home next week.'
