Parents thank QA in Portsmouth for looking after baby Finley who was born weighing only 1lb 7ozÂ

Today is World Prematurity Day and several parents have shared their story to show what nurses in the neonatal unit at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth have done for them '“ including Clive and Rebekah Hambry of Waterlooville.

On Friday, November 9 Clive was getting up for work and Becky was complaining of a stomach ache.

Clive went off to get her a hot water bottle but when he returned she had collapsed on the floor in agony. Clive called 111, an ambulance was sent and she was taken into QA.

Becky said: '˜This is my first child so I had nothing to compare it to, but I had never experienced pain like this - it went from 1-10 in less than five minutes, so I knew there was something wrong. In the ambulance I tried to convince myself that it was just Braxton Hicks contractions and I just had a really low tolerance to pain, that this would just be a really bad hiccup and it would all be ok.  

However I had apparently started bleeding in the ambulance and then when the doctors wheeled in the resuscitaire I knew the baby was coming there and then. Seven minutes after my waters broke he was born.'

Finley Hambry was born on November 9 weighing 795 grams (about 1lb, 7oz). He is currently on a ventilator and his health has been up and down.

Becky said: '˜People are really shocked when we tell them and when they see him but the worst thing was the fact that there was no warning signs. I had a perfect pregnancy up until that point and then all of a sudden I was a mum and I felt completely baffled as I had not had any time to prepare.

'˜It's all still sinking in and it's scary when the team mention things like a heart murmur and that he is struggling to breath, but also good that they are so honest and that these things are actually normal for a baby of his age. The staff have been amazing from start to finish and they are here 24/7 doing 12-hour shifts so have been fantastic.' 

Clive said: '˜We feel so lucky as he has all his fingers and all his toes. We just did not know what to expect where he was born so early. It still feels a little early for congratulations or to be totally confident, but it's good to know that we're in it together and that we can feel upset or sad and that's ok. Nothing can prepare you for this but he is fighting so we will too. We called him Finley as it means Warrior and that is so true.'
