Portsmouth residents called to help save lives by donating blood

RESIDENTS in Portsmouth are being called to help save a life '“ by donating blood.

Blood donations are always needed as hospitals in England require about 6,000 units of blood every day to treat a range of patients, so it is essential to keep stock levels healthy.

NHS Blood and Transplant wants donors from all blood groups and communities and in particular needs donors with the universal blood group O negative, and A negative to come forward as well as people from black and south Asian communities.

Michelle Laserna, senior marketing co-ordinator at NHS Blood and Transplant, thanked those already donating in Portsmouth.

‘Without your generous donation it wouldn’t be possible to help to save the lives of those who need it,’ she added.

Donated blood is not just used to help people in accidents and emergencies – it can be vital for a range of life-saving procedures, from a blood transfusion to save the life of a new mother or to treat blood disorders, such as sickle cell anaemia and Thalassaemia.
