QA maternity team completing Great South Run to raise money

MIDWIVES will be taking part in the Great South Run to raise cash for the refurbishment of a room used for bereavement.

The group of 24 – which includes two student midwives and a maternity support worker – from Queen Alexandra Hospital is running the 10-mile race in October. The runners want to raise thousands of pounds to makeover a room on the labour ward used for bereavement.

Having already raised more than £2,100, the group is training hard in preparation for the challenge and are looking forward to crossing the finish line. The target is £4,000.

Charlotte Burley, one of the midwives running, said: ‘Our bereavement family room is a space which means a lot to those who use it.

‘We really want to make it a special and homely environment as possible.

‘The run is going to be a struggle for most of us so we’re training really hard between shifts to build our strength up.

‘So far we’re really enjoying it.

‘A newly-refurbished room will make a huge impact on the relationship we are able
to have with bereaved parents.

‘We’re hoping that they will be able to make the most of the space once the refurb is complete.’

The Great South Run is being held in Portsmouth on Sunday, October 23.

Thousands of people are expected to take part both in competitive and fun runs.
