REGIONAL: Warning after '˜hazardous' containers wash up on beaches

Council officers have warned people to be aware of '˜hazardous' containers that have washed up along island beaches.

Isle of Wight Council said they had been made aware of a number of five-litre containers which had appeared on the coast due to recent high winds.

It added that some of the containers have been found to contain liquid that could be hazardous, and have warned the public to avoid contact with them. Officers have been on hand to collect them and dispose of them safely.

A spokeswoman for the council said most of the containers had washed up on the west coast of the island, and were unlikely to be found in the Solent.

Residents can report the location of the containers to the council on 01983 821000 (ext 8720), or if out of hours, Wightcare on 01983 821105.
