The Rowans Hospice will be starting the venture in September and it will support people who require daily living care.

The scheme will be for adults who need private care and is separate to the free care given for patients at The Rowans Hospice site, in Purbrook. It will offer personal, live-in, respite and temporary care, helping clients to continue to live independently in their own home or recover after a stay in hospital.

It will be offered to people living in Gosport and Fareham, with plans to expand it to other areas nearby.

Ruth White, chief executive of The Rowans Hospice, said: ‘All charitable hospices constantly need to explore new fundraising opportunities and business ventures to maintain sustainable income streams.

‘In the past five years a fair number of hospices across the country have developed social care agencies as a way to attract new income through the delivery of social care.

‘Hospices have therefore developed care agencies, building on their good reputation and renowned high standard of care; utilising their experience, training and education programmes to attract the highest calibre of carers and customers.’

Social care supports people with activities to do with daily living. It is not free so private agencies are mainly used to deliver support to people at home.

Although The Rowans Hospice looks after people with life-limiting and progressive diseases, its care agency will be available for all adults needing privately-funded care.

It is different to The Rowans Hospice at Home scheme, which provides specialised end-of-life care for people who wish to die at home.

Ms White added: ‘Initially we are launching Rowans Care Agency in Fareham and Gosport.

‘However, we hope to extend this across Portsmouth and south-east Hampshire. We are also keen to explore opportunities with adult social care to deliver statutory-funded care packages for those who are unable to afford social care.’

The Rowans Hospice is now keen to find more community care assistants to expand the service. Recruitment events will be held tomorrow from 6pm until 8pm and on August 13 between 10am and midday in the Southwick Suite at The Rowans Hospice.
