WATCH: Havant doctor says goodbye to leg hair as he prepares for cycle challenge

GP Roger Sutton bore the pain as members of staff ripped off the wax stripes at his Havant practice yesterday.

The 56-year-old is cycling 120 miles in the Lake District on Sunday and said if he reached his £1,000 target he would have his legs waxed.

With just days to go until the event, his donations reached £1,600 and he decided to go ahead with the waxing.

Dr Sutton, who works at Staunton Surgery, said: ‘I wanted a way to get people to sponsor me for the challenge and I said if I raised enough, I would have my legs waxed.

‘It wasn’t actually as bad as other people had led me to believe although some parts of it were like being whipped with stinging nettles.

‘But I am happy that I surpassed my target. People have been really generous.’

Dr Sutton, from Southsea, signed up for the cycling event and afterwards, decided he would also raise money for The Rowans Hospice.

He has been a trustee of the Purbrook hospice for two years and wanted to support the work they do.

‘I have done cycling events before in the New Forest but nothing like this with the peaks,’ he said.

‘The distance isn’t too bad but it will be all the hills which will cause problems.

‘Training has been good though and I have clocked up about 1,000 miles.

‘I have been riding around the Meon Valley for the hills so hopefully that will help.’

Although he only became a trustee for The Rowans Hospice, which offers end-of-life care, two years ago Dr Sutton has been working with them through his job as a GP.

He added: ‘I have been sending patients to them for as long as I’ve been a GP so that’s 25 years. They do fantastic work and I am pleased I have been able to raise money and support them.’

Dr Sutton did say he was unsure of any future fundraisers.

‘I think I’ll wait to see how I feel after Sunday,’ he added.
