Ray also has a watercolour by Hand of ships at Aden. It is believed the artist was born in the late 1800s and died in the mid-20th century. He is buried in Stubbington parish church. His daughter was married in Southsea in the 1930s which makes Ray believe he might have retired there after his naval service.

Ray has asked me to publish the watercolour to see if anyone can identify the location in Southsea. Also to see if anyone has any knowledge of Capt Hand and his work, both naval and artistic.

The gun carriage crew comprised chief petty officers, petty officers and ratings from HMS Excellent, Whale Island, and all were dressed in square rig with long white gunnery gaiters.
