Armed forces minister Archie Hamilton told them: ‘The war was a brilliantly executed victory in the Gulf and you are returning to a victorious welcome.’

Cardiff’s commanding officer, Commander Adrian Nance beamed with pride as his destroyer arrived safely home.

He said: ‘We were overwhelmed by the warmth and depth of support given to us. After five months patrolling in the Gulf we are delighted to be home at last.’
