I have been trying to find a picture to celebrate the Guildhall’s 125th anniversary with some atmosphere to it and at last I’ve found one in David Bowler’s marvellous book Portsmouth Trolleybuses.

Here we see the Guildhall on a foggy night in 1937. The Coronation of George VI enabled the council to splash out and build a wooden battleship – HMS Coronation – in Guildhall Square over the top of the shelter.

It caused a sensation at the time and the Guildhall makes a superb backdrop.
